Because nothing says ‘I love you' like an indulgent hamper… Wooden Treasure Chest

Best chocolate gifts for Christmas 2023, from £9.75

Chocolate is a failsafe gift, whatever the occasion. But with so many tempting treat boxes out there, how do you know which hamper is going to hit the sweet spot? The Good Housekeeping Institute has been hard at work, testing each and every element of this year’s chocolate gifts to find the very best (and no, we can't believe our luck either!).

From all-vegan chocolate selections to budget-friendly gestures starting at £9.75, there’s something for every chocolate lover this year.

Our expert panel sampled 40 chocolate gifts from the leading retailers, small independents and artisan chocolatiers, in search of the best for 2023. Each was scored on the quality of the contents (when it came to chocolate, we were looking for an intoxicating aroma, glossy shine, smooth texture and well-balanced sweetness), with additional consideration given for premium packaging, reliable nationwide delivery and overall giftability.

These are the ones they’ll be sending this year.

Our winning gift is a bumper selection of Melt’s vegan-friendly dark chocolates, all wrapped up in a branded tote. A highlight was the praline assortment, which received one of the highest scores our experts have ever given!

The lucky recipient will also enjoy the bittersweet candied orange peel pieces and 70% dark chocolate sea salt bar, receiving eight items in total.

Not such a fan of dark chocolate? This milky alternative scored an impressive 91/100 with our panel and is a little more affordable too!

We don’t think you can go wrong with chocolate and champagne, and certainly not when it’s from luxury retailer Harvey Nichols. This premium gift set contains a selection of the brand’s flavoured champagne truffles, alongside a bottle of Premier Cru champagne — a match made in heaven!

We think this is an excellent choice if you have under £40 to spend. It’s filled with crowd-pleasing chocolatey treats from London bakery Cutter & Squidge, including fruity white chocolate bark and a box of quality truffles. The hot chocolate and shortbread is presented in pretty, reusable tins, and we’ll be saving the chocolate orange popcorn for munching in front of Christmas films. Yum!

If you’ve got a little more to spend, you won’t be disappointed with this wooden crate filled to the brim with Chococo’s best bits. Inside, you’ll find beautifully presented boxes of chocolates, individual bars and nutty clusters – it’s hard to pick a favourite, but the truffle selection proved particularly popular.

With biodegradable and compostable packaging all-round, there’s a lot to like about this bumper selection.

Booja-Booja's all-vegan line-up is beautifully presented with an “adventure map” to explain the flavours. The lucky recipient will tuck into 25 chocolates, and our testing team was particularly impressed by how each flavour lived up to its description. Stand-outs include the dark chocolate hazelnut crunch, zesty chocolate orange and the sweet and salty almond salted caramel.

Love Coca has outdone itself this year with its fun, festive, eco-friendly packaging. Kids and adults alike will be impressed by the triple-layered Christmas Chocolate Nutcracker containing nuts, truffles and buttons, and super cute Buttons the Penguin will put a smile on anyone's face. Elsewhere, the Christmas chocolate bar is full of festive spice, chunky nuts and dried fruit, and we’re confident the chocolate-covered biscuits will disappear quicker than the time it takes to make a brew.

What’s more, for every hamper purchased, Love Cocoa will plant six trees on your behalf, making this an excellent gift with feel-good vibes.

Whittard's luxury hot chocolate set feels perfect for the winter months. You’ll be spoilt for choice with both classic and white chocolate powders, which both dissolved well to create silky, smooth drinks. Of course, hot chocolate isn't complete without melted marshmallows, so this box includes a generous tub of pink and white treats to sprinkle on top.

Cake or Death’s indulgent letterbox brownies have been given a festive make-over ahead of the big day. Inside, you’ll find three vegan-friendly flavours — chocolate orange, black forest and tiffin — all of which are super soft, rich and fudgy. They’ll be sent directly to the recipient in a fun leopard print box (so you can swerve the post office), making this the ideal gift for under £20.

Monty Bojangles’ sweet and creamy truffles never disappoint. Here, they’ve been packaged in a set of art deco-style cat tins for the feline-lover. The panel would have preferred less packaging (chocolates were individually wrapped) but taste-wise, they’re faultless.

Sometimes, all you want is a cracking box of chocolates, and Venchi has nailed the brief with this nutty assortment, presented in a beautiful, reusable tin. With something for everyone, highlights include the light and airy milk “chocomousse” and the rich “antica ricetta” with notes of amaretto.

If you haven't yet had the pleasure of trying Venchi’s “Chocaviar”, let us introduce you – it’s a range of decadent chocolates, sprinkled with tiny caviar-like cocoa spheres.

This box contains three variations — milk chocolate with hazelnut paste, dark chocolate with burnt caramel, and the 75% extra-dark chocolate for those who like their truffles decidedly grown-up.

At £12 this inexpensive gift pack will make an excellent stocking filler or secret Santa gift. If you’re new to the brand, the premise behind Tony’s Chocolonely is that every bar is made to tackle poverty and exploitation in the cocoa industry — so you can tuck in knowing each bite is 100% slavery-free.

Every one of the six flavours was spot on, but if we had to choose a favourite, it would be the creamy milk chocolate with crunchy hazelnut pieces, closely followed by the dark chocolate and almond sea salt bar.

Guylian has recently rebranded with a new 100% recyclable sage green and gold box. Inside, the Fairtrade seashell choccies are as delicious as ever, and you get a bumper selection. Aside from the original nostalgic hazelnut flavour, new variations are mixed with fruit, nuts and coffee, so there should be something for everyone.

Monty Bojangles’ sweet and creamy truffles never disappoint. Here, they’ve been packaged in a striking cat tin for the feline-lover in your life. There are four flavours to enjoy — chocolate, caramel, orange and popcorn — all of which had a rich cocoa content and melt in the mouth texture.

We love the concept behind Letter Box Hamper, which allows you to send beautifully wrapped gourmet gifts to loved ones. The brand handpicks items from artisan British producers, and this dark chocolate tasting set — which contains bars from the likes of Willie’s Cacao and Love Cocoa — may just be our favourite yet.

Our panel particularly enjoyed the decadent hot chocolate buttons and cacao-dusted cashews, which struck just the right bittersweet balance.

This traditional wicker basket is stuffed to the brim with seven chocolatey treats. The flavoured sharing bars proved most popular with our experts, and the festive truffles provide a beautiful pop of colour in red, green and white. The hot chocolate shaker will be loved by families, and will last long after the last hot chocolate flake has melted...

You don’t need us to tell you that chocolate and fizz are a winning gifting combination, and one that Hotel Chocolat has perfected in this hamper (complete with a mini bottle of prosecco).

Cocoa-lovers will love the gorgeous ribbon-tied “Everything Mini Selection”, salted caramel chocolate puddles and 70% dark fruit and nut nano slab. Even the truffles have been infused with champagne, while still retaining a rich cacao note to please the purists.

Tucked inside a gold-embossed eau de nil gift box, the lucky recipient will discover a crisp and refreshing bottle of Fortnum’s blanc de blanc champagne alongside a tray of 32 decadent truffles – these offer a heady hit of champagne and an ever so slightly effervescent texture as they melt on the tongue.

Unmistakably luxurious, this is a gift worthy of any extra-special celebration.

With an interesting mix of products — think chocolate covered raisins, milk truffles, salted caramel chocolate bar and flavoured domes — this proved to be a well-priced gift for last minute shoppers. You can add a free video message before sending, and the cute, reusable wicker basket can be repurposed when they’re all done with the contents.

If they prefer a decadent red over a bottle of fizz, this is the hamper to go for. It contains a selection of dark chocolate bars and buttons, all of which are the perfect accompaniment to the big, bold Spanish red included.
